#FridayReads, Alex Myers, Amy Greene, Amy Tan, Cressida Cowell, Internationl Women's Day, Jennifer Clement, Sheryl St. Germain, Tracy Winn, Women writers

If you stick with me for long, you’ll realize that I am loyal to no genre or school.  I just go with what I like and that tends to span galaxies. Here are some titles by or about women that I highly recommend:

dragonHow to Betray a Dragon’s Hero, the latest in the Hiccup the Viking adventures from the ever-prolific Cressida Cowell. If you haven’t read the others in this awesome series (not just for kids), you are missing out. Buy the set, then fight your kids for the books!

somebodyMrs. Somebody Somebody: Stories, debut collection (released in 2010) from writer Tracy Winn, all about a troubled Massachusetts mill town and its inhabitants. Beautiful prose.

swampsongsSwamp Songs: The Making of an Unruly Woman, a very Southern memoir from Louisiana gal, Sheryl St. Germain. She also has several collections of poetry, which you should seek out.

fateThe Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, an illuminating look at the background and writing life of Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan.  Follow her active twitter feed @AmyTan for more insights.

revolutionaryRevolutionary: A Novel,a new release from transgender writer Alex Myers, brings us the true story of Deborah Samson who fought in the Revolutionary War disguised as a man.

stolenPrayers for the Stolen is another new release by Mexican writer Jennifer Clement. It’s a gripping, no-punches-pulled look at the life of women in rural Mexico. Just received this one, and it can’t be missed. Very powerful and perfect for International Women’s Day.

long manLong Man is the second book from Amy Greene. This is the story of a tight-knit Appalachian town in the summer of 1936 as it unravels in the face of a  flood.  I have just started into this one, and it is every bit as good at Bloodroot so far.  I’ll try to give you a better review later.

Happy reading, peeps! Have a great weekend, and stay tuned for more good stuff coming next week.
